Altruista Recognizes Julie Bateman During Nurses Week

Julie Bateman, RN, is a clinical subject matter expert with Altruista Health. She joined the company in January 2020.

What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the profession of nursing?

This is a very versatile profession! I have practiced in acute care facilities, homes, health plans, and now as a vendor. At each transition I wondered if I would lose the connection I felt to helping people in the storm. I have found that as my career has evolved, so has the nature of my help – first to individuals, then to populations, and now to health plans working to provide access to appropriate care for their members efficiently and effectively. With each iteration, I continue to feel the satisfaction that comes from helping people manage their health and well-being.

Why did you go into nursing?

I wanted to do something meaningful with my life after my mother passed. I was so impressed with the nurses who worked with her, who took time to explain the reasons behind the treatments (sometimes more than once because she had lung cancer that metastasized to the brain) and listened beyond her anger to validate her feelings of frustration and fear. I decided I wanted to be the calm in the storm of patient’s lives.

What inspires you the most in your day-to-day work?

By helping clients maximize the functionality of GuidingCare to meet their unique needs, and training them on its features, I make it easier for health plans to understand their population’s unique characteristics and identify members who need help either now, or who may in the future. There is a tremendous amount of data available to plans; presenting it as useable, actionable information that can be tracked and trended is key. The more accurate and efficient this process is, the better the outcomes can be for the members of the health plan.

How does Altruista support the higher values of nursing?

GuidingCare streamlines the basic nursing process: Assess, Plan, Implement and Evaluate, at the individual, population, and subpopulation levels. Greater efficiency with this contributes to improved healthcare delivery and improved overall health over time.
