What inspired you to become a nurse?

I come from a long line of nurses in my family. My grandmother, my mother and aunts are all nurses. Growing up, seeing how happy they were to support people in their jobs encouraged me to pursue a career in this industry. I’d always known I was interested in science. When I discovered that I am actually making a difference in people’s lives, my passion and dedication to the sector grew even stronger. I’ve had the privilege of working as a nurse in a number of medical, academic and educational settings.

What is the best part of your nursing job?

One of the most satisfying feelings is knowing that my compassion, support, communication and commitment will help a patient get through the night. The little things you do for your patient can also make a big difference. The personal connection I can create with patients is the most fulfilling aspect of my job as a nurse. A patient remembers their nurse no matter how long it has been. They may or may not recall the nurse’s name, but they do recall whether they were pleasant and caring. I have a patient who is a very good friend of mine. Even after 10 long years of giving my nursing care to her, she still remembers me and calls me every now and then.

What would you say to someone who is considering a career in nursing?

The most important aspect of being a nurse is patience and compassion. To work as a nurse in today’s world, you must have compassion and it must come from the heart. Patients depend on you, and it’s satisfying when you can help them feel better. As a nurse, you’ll need to have a lot of patience and it won’t be easily deterred by anything. That, in my opinion, makes you a better human, a better spouse, a better parent, a better family member and a better friend.

Anything else you want people to know about your profession?
